Live On Three: E02 – Cheating
The second episode of LO3 (Live on Three) has gone live. In this episode we have quite the cast of eSports personalities including Smeagol, Slasher, and Weenus. The focus of discussion is on the recent CHEATING that occurred in the CEVO Alienware Winter Frag Fest, but it goes even beyond that. Additionally, alot of discussion on what games could make the list for eSports Games of 2009. If you have comments or suggestions on the show feel free to toss them to djWHEAT@djWHEAT.tv.

omg, Smeagol rocks.
One problem though, I wouldn’t be looking toward WCG for innovation in game selection, they just have the capacity to run a number of different titles because they have a different selection criteria than your typical community-led tournaments.
From my perspective, the tournament organizers have the responsibility to provide the most even playing field possible because that is what the community wants. People want to turn up to a competition and believe they have exactly the same chance of winning through skill alone as others in the tournament. Ideally, if everyone is of the same mindset you don’t even need referees as cheating invalidates YOURSELF as you are now not testing whether your skill is greater, but whether you can thwart the system. You’re not competing against other players, you are competing against the tournament itself. When people cheat or attempt to subvert the competition, the largest damage is to the integrity of the competition itself. Once people lose confidence that the tournament is providing a level playing field, then the whole tournament becomes pointless as a win or loss may have little to do with actual skill.
So the organizers position is to protect the community, and needs to do it with authority. Authority isn’t given lightly though, it needs to be earned through understanding the needs of the community, being proactive to seek the best level playing field, applauding fair play, and coming down hard on inappropriate behaviour. If you don’t intimately know the community, or the reasons the rules are in place, or don’t have the balls to enforce the rules, then you’re really hurting the community instead of helping it.
