As for the Mouse vs. Stick, i really didn’t mean to say that ANY match played w/ sticks is inferior. I’ve seen some amazing Halo shots and whatnot… but you can’t seriously tell me that if we had a choice between watching QuakeLive played by A> 8 guys with sticks or B> 8 guys w/ Mouse/keyboard, you would choose the sticks.

Same goes with the mouse vs. thumbstick point. A mouse user easily will beat a thumbstick user (they darn well better) but that doesn’t mean that a match played with thumbsticks is positively inferior.

The reason why there’s no mouse support in console games isn’t because it’s impossible to do. Isn’t because Sony/MS wants us to buy their gadgets only. A console game will be programmed for 30 fps, which is quite enough when controlling a game with a gamepad. It’s not enough for a competitive fps game with mouse control. Playing Uncharted 2 with a mouse would reveal the consoles limitations to well, and it would force devs to give the player a choice: Feels good to play, but looks like shit. Or looks sweet, but lags.

8/21 ~ 8/22 – BlizzCon Stream w/ djWHEAT, Tasteless, & Artosis = Most EPIC commentator line up ever! Gonna be a SWEET EVENT!!

I’m a Starcraft player and I have been a hardcore RTS player for most of my life. I have always followed the Starcraft scene both foreign, and korean. The reason why I think i’ve spent so many days and hours on starcraft, is because I’ve always loved my community. The reason why I believe I got into RTS rather then say FPS or Fighting games is that sense of community that Starcraft has always cultivated.

With that sense of community that starcraft has. It has just made it easier and easier to be a fan of starcraft as a ESport. People are constently hosting tournys and making videos and casts similar to what you did at Devastation. Its really those kind of things that drive a community to succeed, and build itself up. People will see you stream, show, and enthusiasm, and say to themself “I would like to do somthing simmilar myself.”.

Until your stream at Devastation I had seen almost no coverage from any competitive fighting games EVER. I personally have not played any fighting games for about 10 years, but someone posted a link to your stream from Devastation on a Starcraft forum. I watched it and truly enjoyed it despite my lack of knowledge in the game. I’d like to see more, and hope your cast inspires the fighting game community to get off there butts and get there game out to the public more.

Finaly about your show. I just think its great your doing a show about just Esports. Not a show about any one game or type of game. Thats one thing ALL gaming communitys have a big problem with. This kind of “GO RTS FUCK FPS”, or “GO PC FUCK CONSOLE GAMERS” type attitude. We are all in the same boat and success for any one of us only improves the odds for success for the rest of us in the future. So keep pluging away and trying to bridge the gap between the communitys and get Esports out to a large audience. Sorry for this long rambling rant btw. good job !

What walter did in the game was enter a competition he had the potential to win. And when his opponent actually outplayed him, he “gave up”. What if Team B makes it to the Super Bowl and in the first 2 minutes get’s scored on 3 times. Any professional team would keep going, no matter what. Do you think they deserve to be there if instead they go, “Hey, it’s 21 to 0, fuck this… let’s give up” and then exclaim to the other team, “Oh we were too busy eating Doritos and doing Sudoku puzzles to care about playing you guys seriously”.

I’m not OK with that and there is a big difference.

There was a lot of reversal-shitting on the community here and I think all of this could’ve been approached in a much more mature manner … from both parties.

There is checkboxes in options that will give you a total of 4 hot bars. Also on chinese client you can lock the hotbars.

Channels:

There are channels in the first two areas this is because 5000 people log in at same time and we wouldnt get a single mob in these areas if there wasnt channels. There are only channels in Poeta and Verteron.

Grinding:

This needs some writing. They are not only translating the game they are rewriting so the language like jokes actually make sense to EU and US. This is being done now, beta is still version 1.0

This is the reason for some bugged quests.

In korea they are on 1.2 and 1.3 will be out soon. The grinding is allready been fixed in the later versions. I quote someone that play korean Aion:

“If you group:

1.0- ~70% of the total XP can be made questing
1.1- ~90% of the total XP can be made questing
1.2- ~100% of the total XP can be made questing

If you don’t group:

1.0- ~50% of the total XP can be made questing

Grouping means doing the group quests and mission that are too hard to do on your own.

The loophole -

Presumably the loophole that Jacob is talking about comes from when Ben’s daughter dies. If you remember from the episode, Ben states that widmore broke the rules, thus giving Ben the right to break the rules. This is further supported by the fact that Smokey (presumably Esau) has the ability to change forms, and also has “scanned” or “judged” previous people.

The best example of this is when Ben and Mocke head into the temple to meet Smokey. Ben falls through the floor into another part of the temple and Mocke announces that he’s going to find a vine. Only after Mocke has disappeared does Ben meet the smoke monster, who not only judges him, but also transforms into Alex. Alex gets that same creepy-eyed look on her face that Yemi gave Eko, then slams Ben against the wall and demands that he do whatever Locke/Mocke says.

As soon as Smokey/Alex disappears, Mocke reappears with a vine, innocently asking, “So what did the smoke monster have to say?”

@shebasheba: #1 reason for it not working seems to be MSN Messenger. Uninstall, make sure MSN, Skype, EVERYTHING is closed – then reinstall. Another thing to note is this was tested only with Skype v3.x and not the new Skype v4.0. I have NOT tested it yet with v4.0, but if you continue to have problems, I’ll try it out and see if I get any results on my end.

The point of commentating is to inform viewers what is going on, enhance the game-watching experience by making it exciting even through the boring parts of the game. Last week, Gootecks brought up a good point in saying that you dont need to know when you see a guy with 5% health make a comeback to win vs. the other guy with 90% health to know that was a great match.

Probably the most famous high level match is the diago vs. jwong video. Do you think that fighting game commentary can equal the exhilaration of the crowd? Hearing the crowd seems to be enough commentating for me during that match.

It seems like it would be difficult to talk about the game, about what a player is thinking at that moment, their strategies&options, have colorful banter with their co-commentators, etc.. in 99seconds. I hope to see your commenting goes to the next level to make fighting games even more exciting the way Tasteless and Super Daniel Man have done for the Starcraft community.

Also, did Ed ever play Valkyria Chronicles? It’s a really good strategy RPG for PS3. There are some annoying parts with the UI but I definitely think it needs to be mentioned on the RPG list of games that kick ass on the PS3.

They definitely need some more, though.

MLG = HLG to me and will continue until I see REAL support on multiple titles. Kudo’s to how big they are in America and for providing gaming events to Halo players across the U.S.A, but they have a long way to go to me.

It’s bad enough in the US where gaming is no where near the level as it is in Europe/Asia, that there is only one league that is pretty much just focused on one game and one console- and who limit their players with contracts.

RAWR dang it, the only ones that will survive is the ones that not only use their business models to create money outside of sponsors (Like MLG) , but ALSO truly integrate PC AND Console and host many major titles (closest to this is WSVG).

Console market is simply too big to ignore, EVEN in Europe where they just need to be introduced to the idea of pro gaming on console.

And PC Gaming built this sport, but at least here is it is getting buried by console? What’s up with that! We need these together and we need these gamers brought together!

We also somehow need to continue to try and build this industry as a “sport” and figure out how to pull spectators in- spectators that don’t just play that game. There has to be way to do this at these tournaments. For a real future, this sport has to be mainstream, not just appealing to the people that compete.

FYI my thoughts on Dante- he defiantly didn’t deserve to go out the way he did. It was literally the luck of the draw, and we knew since there were two people on our team that never played while the rest had and you don’t just “pick” up this game, that he was going up for elimination.

If it was 1v1 this would have still been O.K., as previously anyone could save themselves from elimination at the end of the day, but he didn’t have that opportunity. I am not saying he WOULDN’T have went home if it wasn’t teams, he just didn’t get a chance to do it on his own.

Good show enjoyed listening to it. I’m sure the next one will have a lot more to talk about especially with the state of ESWC.

Anyways, once again I’m ecstatic to see the show back, can’t wait for new episodes.

Oh, and Noby Noby Boy is amazingness.

Why are all VQ3 ctf games so low scoring? The answer is simple, the machine gun. It’s too strong, especially for something that is effective across the map. Watch any q3ctf demo and see how many times the mg kills the flag carrier. In Q1 you spawned with a weak shotgun and in Q2 you spawned with blaster…lol. In those games if the offense executed, killed the defense and got the flag, they usually got the cap. In Q3 you need to get lucky to not get cessed to death by the spawning defenders. I think if players spawned with blaster or nothing in q3ctf, you would see more scores like 5-4, 7-8, etc.

Why were Q1 and Q2 CTF clan matches more exciting and higher scoring? Because of the persistent techs. I’m not talking about rune garbage that is in Quake Live. In Q2ctf 4 techs spawned on the map, haste, doc, power amp, and disruptor. Only one player could hold a given tech at a time, and they got to hold it until they either died or manually dropped it. When a CTF team had control of the techs they had control of the map and could chain captures together. So when good clans played in Q2ctf it would be like 3 caps in a row for clan 1, control shift, 5 caps in a row for clan 2, control shift, 4 caps in a row for clan 1. You could see games between top teams with scores like 15-10, with massive score swings.

This also added depth to the game, and increased the importance of strat compared to aim depending on the map. When CCTF was released for Q3, I played in the CAL Season 1. Our starting lineup was myself, gryp519, stx-northman, prk, sp0rk. We had the best aim by far of any team. We would crush teams on the smaller maps where aim dominated, but would consistently lose on the remade Q2ctf maps because we did not organize our strat around the runes and quad well enough, and the teams full of old school q2ctf players did.

Finally, why is the grapple good? I think for clan matches it’s not a big deal, though it isn’t used in the way wheat and hoens claim it is. Check out this video of some q2ctf action and see what it really looks like. For me, the best things about it are that you can have bigger maps (more variety) and you can run flag routes underwater.

The reason grapple was great for Q2ctf is that you could make the maps bigger but still get around them in a reasonable amount of time. This created an awesome pub scene where you could join a pub server with 20-30 people with skill ranges going from the best competitive player to newb and it worked because the map was big enough to hold everyone. The newbs would go around and do their thing, and the good players would be working the ruins and having their high level game at the same time. CCTF pubs had this dynamic too, and it was a lot of fun.

In Q3/Q4/QL there are no pub servers if you want high level ctf action. Only pickup servers where you have to wait to play a 5v5 match, and if a newb gets picked to be on a team, he gets crushed because 4 out of 5 players on the opposing team are awesome.

Don’t get me wrong, I played a lot of Q3ctf, but I was already starting to get competitive when I did. When I played Q2ctf the pub scene sucked me into the competitive scene, like it did a lot of people, which is why there were so many more Q2ctf clans at its peak than Q3ctf clans.

One problem though, I wouldn’t be looking toward WCG for innovation in game selection, they just have the capacity to run a number of different titles because they have a different selection criteria than your typical community-led tournaments.

From my perspective, the tournament organizers have the responsibility to provide the most even playing field possible because that is what the community wants. People want to turn up to a competition and believe they have exactly the same chance of winning through skill alone as others in the tournament. Ideally, if everyone is of the same mindset you don’t even need referees as cheating invalidates YOURSELF as you are now not testing whether your skill is greater, but whether you can thwart the system. You’re not competing against other players, you are competing against the tournament itself. When people cheat or attempt to subvert the competition, the largest damage is to the integrity of the competition itself. Once people lose confidence that the tournament is providing a level playing field, then the whole tournament becomes pointless as a win or loss may have little to do with actual skill.

So the organizers position is to protect the community, and needs to do it with authority. Authority isn’t given lightly though, it needs to be earned through understanding the needs of the community, being proactive to seek the best level playing field, applauding fair play, and coming down hard on inappropriate behaviour. I know for a fact marcus works harder than 95% of the shoutcasters out there to do this stuff and I give him major props for that. I stopped shoutcasting because of people like you and because I couldn’t handle the workload and not getting paid. Marcus has been doing it a lot longer than I did on top of the fact that he has a lot more responsibility with a family and he doesn’t ask for much.

So, in conclusion: stfu son.

To me it sucks in general that one person would generalize a single event without knowing the full details of what went down.

You can blame me for “pissing off” all you fucking want, but I never regret the decision I made to ensure there was food in my kids mouth and a roof over my families head.

And rightfully so, I don’t expect one fucking soul to jump on board… but I think it’s pretty evident just how strong and committed the community is. If you took the time to be a part of it and understand it, maybe you wouldn’t come in here and make a complete ass of yourself.

Some people were asking me how to white balance the camera to get the best picture, so I think I’ll put together a follow up article. It’s so easy to do and it makes a CRAZY awesome difference.

And in regards to learning art.. One of the most talented artists in my school taught himself when he was in prison for 25 years. No idea why. But it just goes to show that anyone can self teach themselves. (Not to compare your grandma to an ex-con, anyway)

In my recent life drawing class, I learned porportions, anatomy, foreshortening, and how these things effect eachother. More importantly, I learned to draw what I see and not to rush things.

Practice will make give you a better sense on how to hold your pencil steady, but there are just many techniques, styles and history you have to learn to be top notch. Its possible to teach yourself that kind of stuff (especially with the internet) but having a good instructor is always a plus.

I’m in for Graphic Design, anyway. I’ve grown to love drawing but its not my focus right now.
